When you hear a fire alarm or are directed to evacuate follow these guidelines:
Leave belongings behind.
Close doors and windows as you leave.
Walk, do not run to the nearest stairwell or emergency door.
Do not use the elevators.
Exit signs are available and provide directions which will lead to safety outside of the building. Building evacuation maps are also posted in rooms and classrooms that do not have clearly marked exit signs.
If unable to exit the building, move to the nearest Area of Refuge (typically the elevator lobby or stairwell landing) and call UTA Police Dispatch (UTA PD) at 817-272-3003 for assistance.
Evacuation chairs are provided in many stairwells for those who cannot walk down the stairs.
Do not re-enter the building until the emergency is over and an “all clear”message is issued by the on-site emergency response personnel.
Evacuation Procedures for Mobility Impaired Individuals:
Elevators should not be used for emergency evacuation of a building.
If located on the ground floor, a mobility impaired individual should use the nearest safe and appropriate exit (ground level, wheelchair ramp etc.).
If unable to exit the building, move to the nearest Area of Refuge (typically the elevator lobby or stairwell landing) and call UTA Police Dispatch (UTA PD) at 817-272-3003 for assistance.
If located on the floor of a building linked by a bridge, the individual should move to the next building horizontally.
Individuals who are not able to evacuate the building or move horizontally to a linked building should proceed to the nearest usable stairway, enter the stairwell, and remain on the landing.
If the stairwell becomes filled with smoke or unsafe, the individual should move back into the building and proceed to another usable stairway.
If no other stairway is available, the individual should find a room that is tenable and close the door.
The individual should telephone the UTA Police Department (UTAPD) at 817-272-3003 to notify them of their location and wait for emergency personnel to assist.
